Countdown to Independence for Kids

I recently shared that Timothy Smith, author of The Danger of Raising Nice Kids had tweeted about this blog!  Thank you for letting me share this.  More to come soon!

One of the our parenting goals is to raise our children to be successful adults.  This will not magically occur without us giving up some of our control, allowing our children to gain more freedom and responsibility.  Easier said than done!  Thankfully Timothy Smith created this chart and gives us some concrete examples below:

Help Your Kids Do More As You Do Less

5 years old - Learn to dress myself
8 years old - Make my own sack lunch.
10 years old - Go to summer camp.
12 years old - Get to choose my own back-to-school clothes.
14 years old - Make dinner for my family once a week.  Get to stay up to 11 PM on the weekends.

Thank you for giving us tools to help us be intentional in our parenting!

It's hard to believe that having a 9 year old puts me smack dab in the middle of this chart  - Coaching is good, not too sure how Consultant will be!   What are you doing to move from Control > Coach > Consultant?
