When my kids do things for themselves and feel successful, I want to shout "YES!" Not only does it help them, but it also helps me! Moms are always trying to squeeze in life skills for our kids. Life Skills are the lessons you need to be successful in life. If you'd like a list by age, click here.
Here are a few kid-friendly solutions that work for my family:
------------------------------
(I felt a little strange putting up a picture of our vacuum and kitchen drawers - but I'm a visual person and thought it might help!)
1. We have a light rechargeable vacuum that the kids can use for the steps, messes, mud, crumbs - you name it! I credit my friend Charlene, who first clued me in that a 3.5 year old child could use a small vacuum and like it! Trust me! (we started with a small Dust Buster and gradually moved up to this one).
2. We keep their cups in a drawer, so they never have to ask for a cup.
3. We also keep their cereal bowls in a drawer. This makes unpacking the dishwasher simple!
4. We keep yogurt in a drawer in the fridge so they can get it out themselves during snack time.
Photographing these drawers encouraged me to clean out the mega disaster drawer- the Junk Drawer! Still trying to make progress on that one!
What do you do that helps your child be more independent?

Ooooh, I wish I had some extra drawers for my kids' cups and bowls! Making our house kid-accessible was one of the best ideas I ever had! We also have accessible art materials...not everything, but paper, pencils, markers, scissors, and a stapler.
I really need to work on this more. Seems like I'm forever up and down up and down getting things like more water and another cracker for my son....
