Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here *virtual handshake*. It’s funny to read someone’s blog, Facebook or Instagram and not know who they are, isn’t it? My name is Kristen and I’m the writer/creator Little Reading Room and Busy Kids Happy Mom.
Why two different things? I love being a teacher and a mom! I tend to share more of my teaching resources, easy ideas and crafts on Instagram. I share things I’m learning, great articles I’ve read and my favorite products on the Busy Kids Happy Mom Facebook page.
First things first, I’m not a perfect mom or teacher and I don’t “do it all”. I usually only share the best stuff or our highlight reel. My own children are school-age and capable of doing more and being creative on their own. This is a Guilt-Free Zone. I share things that have worked for us.
I originally started Busy Kids Happy Mom in 2011 as a place to put all of my ideas. I love sharing things with other moms, but could never find the files! So, in an effort to get things straight, this blog was created. I love connecting with people from all over the world. I’m always amazed at how far the World Wide Web reaches (laugh all you want – my husband does!)
I have worked with children for over 20 years; however, I’ve learned more from the 2 that live in my house. I’m learning right alongside them. They challenge my abilities, they make me crazy sometimes, but I couldn’t imagine life without them.
Why Busy Kids Happy Mom?
I love it when my kids are involved doing things rather than video games or TV. I don’t like running them all over town to classes or sports. Both of my children have full lives; however, we feel that family time is most important.
Why Little Reading Room?
I am a lifelong learner. I’m always learning and growing. I spend a lot of time thinking about what will make things easier to understand for my students or teachers I’m working alongside. As a Reading Specialist, I’ve spent the last 20 years learning as much as I possibly can about children and the way they learn to read. I’m inspired by the community I’m surrounded by and love to share what I’m learning.
If I ever have the pleasure of meeting you face-to-face, I would never rattle off my resume to you. That said, some people like to know that I have a background in education.
I know some people are curious… I have a degree in Early Childhood Education from Virginia Tech and a Masters Degree in Education (emphasis in Reading) from the University of Virginia. I’ve taught both as an elementary classroom teacher and a reading specialist. Currently I work as a Reading Specialist in a local elementary school.
Note to other moms: While my degrees prepared me for a career in education, I’ve learned the most from the two kids that live in my house!
