Special thanks to Kim {an awesome blogging mom} from Texas! What I used to do...Last summer, I was on the hunt for a new kind of discipline/reward technique to use in our home. At age four, it seems our son had outgrown the time out system that I had been using since he was about 18 months. He was no longer phased by sitting in time out proving it a waste of my time and his! I knew I wanted to focus more on rewarding positive behavior and experimented with a few different techniques. I created a … [Read more...]
Mom Spotlight: Training Your Children (when it’s easier to do it yourself!)
I have admired Carrie for a long time. We first met through MOMSnext. She has an easy way about her that makes you immediately feel comfortable and like her! She's an awesome mom of two boys and they live in the Midwest. I love reading about her adventures with them. You'll love her honesty and her new plan for bringing Life Skills into her son's lives. Her boys are 12 and 10. Recently she posted this picture on Facebook with the title: Training Continues.... I had to ask more! … [Read more...]
Mom Spotlight: Going BIG with Summer Points
Jennisse and I have been friends since our early days in MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) with little ones. She's been doing points for 2 summers. She figured out early that her kids love to earn a lot of points. So, she's setting their sites on 30,000 points this summer. You read that right: Whoa! Love it! So much fun! One thing you should know about Jennisse, is that she is from Puerto Rico and bi-lingual. How cool! Her main areas of focus this summer are Spanish reading and writing, … [Read more...]
Over Complicating Things — coming up with a workable points chart!
A little birdie (my husband) told me that I was making things "a little too complicated". Who me? I had to think of every possibility before actually making the points chart! Here's what was running through my head: How long will it take them to earn their points? About how many do they need to earn each week? How can I encourage force them to do things they really don't want to do? What do they need to do everyday to reach their goals? What can I prepare for them so I … [Read more...]
$$ BIG Money $$ {Summer Points}
This Summer we decided to "pay" our kids with play money for their points. I thought I was going to make a graph or nice poster like Ann did, but it just didn't happen. Reasons why I like it:1. When do they ever get to handle $20 and $50 bills?2. They swap out money with me when the bank is "open" - 2 $10 for a $20, 2 $50 for a $1003. They continue to learn the value of money. My youngest has asked me if I have any $70 or other odd denominations, but he's learning!4. They are responsible … [Read more...]
