Lessons Learned for Future Summer Points

For the past 3 years we’ve had “Read 1000 pages” on the Summer Points chart.  All was great, until this summer.  Good books were tossed aside for fast reads, books with many pictures were chosen over chapter books – all in the name of 1000 pages.  My two finished all of their reading in a few days.  In their defense, my friend tried to warn me.

So, in an effort to keep reading going all summer – we’re toying with the idea of having a 20 book challenge.  10 would have to be chosen from our “approved” list and 10 would be their own choosing.  They’ll still accomplish reading 1000 pages for school, but it will take longer and they’ll be reading at their level.

Do not worry, reading has not stopped at our house – it’s just not as voracious as it was last week.

What’s working for you?  What’s been a bust?  I’d love to know!

We have had to change to time for charting the reading- 50 points for every hour read of age appropriate reading. So far so good! We also just finished the Barnes and Noble summer book challenge and got three new books. The Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler is our new book for the week. She started it in the car on the way home from the store! Love it when they beg for books! Does this English teacher proud!

I love this idea – maybe even better than the other idea I posted above! I’ve been good in the past of having 20 minutes of reading everyday – we all read. Need to step it up and do that again. Thanks!
