Mom Spotlight: Modeling Quiet Time With Your Child {Daily Devotions}

Laura and I became friends through MOMSnext.  It’s so fun to have a fellow teacher share what she is doing with her daughter!

Laura started working with her daughter this summer on a daily quiet time that involved reading a devotional book.  Laura decided to offer 50 points for each week completed.  Woo hoo!  That’s a lot!
After reading The Dangers of Raising Nice Kids by Tim Kimmel, she also decided she needed to model this herself.

Laura was moved by her pastor Lon Solomon’s recommendation “Double your child’s allowance in the summer for having daily devotions, 5 days a week.  If you don’t pay now you’ll be paying later to bail them out of jail.”

Materials:  Journal, Bible, Mom and Daughter Devotional book

Time it takes:  15 minutes to one hour depending on the amount of reading and chatting they do 🙂

Daily routine:
1.  Pray to start time together.
2.  Read from a devotional book and the scripture it references in the Bible.
3.  Chat about its application to daily life.
Book suggestions: The One Year Mother Daughter Devo by Dannah Gresh
From Laura:
The first day met some resistance, but by the fifth day she was asking when we would get to have our quiet talk time! We are getting to know each other at what I call the “heart level”!
At first I thought I would role model this new behavior for a week, so I could show her how to have time with God.  But I realized that continuing this for the whole summer would be beneficial for us both.  It also was keeping me accountable for my time with God too!
Future Plans – Laura and her daughter plan to journal together including thoughts, emotions, reactions they have to any of the points or verses read and discussed.
Thanks Laura!  I was most inspired by the Laura’s modeling to her daughter.  So many times I hope that my children will understand what to do with just 1 or 2 examples.  It takes a long time to learn a new habit.

    Love this practical idea of how to do devotionals with your child. We also love The Jesus Storybook Bible. My kids ask for us to read story after story. Beautiful pictures and beautiful love story of how the Lord had a plan for us from the beginning.
